Music- Induced Hearing Loss – Concert edition
We all love to attend concerts! But did you know that concerts can reach and exceed 105dB, sometimes even peaking at 120dB? That is LOUD!
People with normal hearing usually perceive a comfortable level at 55 to 65dB.
Sounds such as a motorcycle, rifle and a lawn mower reach roughly 100dB. Imagine hearing at that level for the entire concert duration.
Prolonged exposure to any sounds above 85dB can lead to irreversible damage to one’s hearing.
Don’t let this discourage you from attending concerts or any other loud events.
There are things one can do to protect their hearing when exposed to such loud noise.
1) Wear custom earplugs. Best thing you can do to protect your hearing from loud sounds. Custom plugs can prove a better listening experience due to the fact they do not compromise the sound quality. Call our clinic today to schedule your appointment to get yourself a pair of custom plugs today!
2) Try to stay approximately 500 feet away from any speakers. The farther, the safer!
3) There are apps you can download that measure the decibels of your environment. Use these apps to find out where you can stand or sit at a concert where the noise is less than 85 decibels.
4)Take breaks! Remove yourself from the loud noise for a few minutes and give those ears a rest and time to recover. You can do this every hour or so.
Note: Outdoor concerts are a better choice. Less reverberation of sounds and can lower the noise levels up to 30 decibels.
